In some rare positive news, Brandon Morrow and Yunel Escobar are back on the 25-man roster for the Toronto Blue Jays. In fact, Brandon Morrow made his first start since the 11th of June yesterday evening, so I suppose that can be filed under the “super good news” heading. With the good news, however, bad news predictably follows. Anthony Gose and Adeiny Hechavarria have been optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas, leaving Mike McCoy on the 25-man roster.
Now, it is clear that Gose and Hechavarria are far from being ready for the major leagues. However, being that there is only one week before the rosters expand, it is interesting at best to see McCoy remaining with the big club. Meanwhile, Gose and Hechavarria, both of whom could be parts of the big league ball club in 2013, get sent down for what will presumably be a week-long stint in the minor leagues.
Hechavarria has since been recalled after Jose Bautista was placed back on the 15-day disabled list with more wrist soreness. However, the issue of Gose’s demotion in favor of Mike McCoy remains pertinent.
No, Anthony Gose is not ready for the major leagues. I outlined as much in a recent article. However, there have been recent rumblings that the team will give Gose every chance to succeed as their everyday LF in 2013 (please, no!). If this is indeed the case, moving him down for a week in favor of Mike McCoy is senseless.
I believe that the best path of action for Gose is as follows. Leave him up for the remainder of this season. His issues won’t be fixed in triple-A Las Vegas. Anthony Gose has most trouble with breaking pitches, which tend not to break in the Pacific Coast League. Let Gose play center field – instead of McCoy – while Colby Rasmus nurses his sore groin. Continue to allow Moises Sierra to play every day in right. Then, let Gose begin the season next year in triple-A Buffalo, should the Blue Jays actualize their move back to the Northeast.
Regardless of Anthony Gose‘s readiness, sending him back to Las Vegas in favor of Mike McCoy – who could probably use a few more frequent flyer miles – is a head-scratcher.
