With the recent buzz that the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays have been pursuing Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Gavin Floyd since the beginning of Spring Training, it got me thinking about Floyd’s trade value.  Floyd is only due $7.5 million in 2012 and a $9 million team option for 2013, so he is very affordable as a good #3 starter.  With MLB adding a second Wild Card team to the postseason starting this year, it has lead the Blue Jays to believe that they may be one piece away from that spot.  If the Jays believe that Floyd is that piece, then White Sox GM Kenny Williams has to take advantage of that and try to get the best return possible.  The White Sox GM is going to be looking for more and more starting pitching.

Let’s take a look at the names from each team that would interest the Chicago White Sox.  Some names at the major league level that the White Sox could inquire about would be SS Jose Iglesias, OF Ryan Kalish and 1B Lars Anderson.  The Red Sox don’t have much in terms of young, controllable starting pitching.   But here are some names they do have.  These descriptions are made by John Sickels.

2) Matt Barnes, RHP, Grade B+. Has the build and stuff of a rotation anchor, and improved every year in college. Still some rough edges and he won’t get to the majors as fast as Trevor Bauer or Danny Hultzen, but he could be a real steal at 19th-overall in the ’11 draft.

Barnes would have to be a PTBNL (player to be named later) as he was drafted in 2011.

6) Brandon Jacobs, OF, Grade B: Tool-laden outfielder with 20/20 power/speed potential, remains raw with the strike zone but made significant progress in 2011. B+ or higher possible with further refinement.

I think the White Sox would have interest in Jacobs, but as a secondary piece to a starting pitcher.

 8) Sean Coyle, 2B, Grade B-: Hit for power, stole bases, drew walks, adapting well to second base defensively. A second baseman who can hit is harder to find than an outfielder, so I put him ahead of Brentz.

Exactly what I think about Jacobs.

Some other names in the minors that the White Sox would have to take a look at would be OF Bryce Brentz, RHP Anthony Ranaudo, LHP Henry Owens and RHP Brandon Workman.  In the end, if I am the Kenny Williams and the Chicago White Sox staff, I wouldn’t deal with the Red Sox because they just don’t have enough arms for me personally to make a deal.

Now the Blue Jays on the other hand, have a whole lot of what the Chicago White Sox would be looking for.  The Jays have what most scouts call a top 3 farm system that is stacked with arms and a few position players.  Here are some names I think that would be in the White Sox range.

1) Travis D’Arnaud, C, Grade B+: Borderline A-: He would be an A- or maybe even an A if he was more effective at throwing out runners and struck out less often, but he can really hit and is still a superior prospect even with those weaknesses.

2) Jake Marisnick, OF, Grade B+: Speed, defense, and a greatly improved bat. More power development would get him into the A-range.

3) Noah Syndergaard, RHP, Grade B+: I’m a believer in his stats, his size, his command, and his fastball, and I think the secondary stuff will come around. Can easily be in the A-range next year.

4) Justin Nicolino, LHP, Grade B+: I think Syndergaard’s ultimate ceiling is a bit higher, but Nicolino isn’t far behind, and is more polished with his secondary pitches. Could also be in the A-range next year.

5) Daniel Norris, LHP, Grade B+: Higher physical ceiling than Nicolino, but I want to see him in pro ball before ranking him ahead.

6) Deck McGuire, RHP, Grade B+: Doesn’t have the ceiling of the younger guys, but should be a solid inning-eater at worst and won’t need much longer in the minors.

7) Drew Hutchison, RHP, Grade B+: You can’t argue with his results even if he doesn’t have as much physical upside as the guys ahead. Like McGuire, an efficiency expert who should chew through innings.

8) Anthony Gose, OF, Grade B+: Other people will probably rank him higher due to his tools. He’s made a lot of progress, but his hitting approach remains quite raw and the strikeout rate still bothers me. Made big strides refining his defense and baserunning. Grade A tools, Grade C+ skills.

As you can see, the Jays have a lot of young talent that they will have to be willing to talk about if they want Gavin Floyd for the entire season.  Some other names in the minors that could peak the White Sox interest are RHP Asher Wojciechowski, RHP Adonys Cardona and SS Adeiny Hechavarria.  Another name that would be very interesting in these talks would be 24 year old Travis Snider.  Snider is an outfielder that has struggled to adjust to major league pitching, but kills AAA pitching.  A change of scenery could do him very well.

If I am the White Sox I go all out and ask for Travis Snider, Noah Syndergaard, Deck McGuire and Asher Wojciechowski.  Tell them if you want him now for the entire season, then you have to pony up or you can wait and see if you are still in it come the trade deadline when probably at least 10 other teams will be looking for a starting pitcher just like Gavin Floyd.  The least amount I would take would be Travis Snider, Noah Syndergaard, Asher Wojciechowski and Adonys Cardona.

The White Sox are in a postion that they do not have to deal Gavin Floyd this season.  They have that very affordable team option for 2013 ($9 million) that they will easily pick up.  But if a team like the Jays comes in and is willing to deal a good package to the White Sox, then Kenny Williams has to listen.

4 Rants to “Gavin Floyd’s Trade Value?”

  1. Ryan says:

Your out to lunch if you think 4 top prospects is going to be accepted by the Jays, they wouldnt part that much to get Latos what makes you think they will give up more (then the Halladay trade too) to acquire a #3 starter.

  2. Nick says:

If I’m giving up Travis Snider, Noah Syndergaard, Deck McGuire and Asher Wojciechowski, then Floyld would be near the bottom of the list of pitchers im targeting. McGuire’s floor is what Floyld is right now. A heavy ground ball guy with a near 7-8 K/9. Then you add a number 2 potential of Syndergaard who by all accounts is developing excellent secondary stuff. Wojo who coming into last year was rated as one of the best arms in the Jays farm system who had a bad year. AND Snider who even if you take what he has done in the major leagues in his short short career as his ceiling (which is ridiculous bad idea to do, .248/.307/.423)would have been the third best regular on teh White Soxs last year. And you think that package is worth 2 years of a slightly above average pitcher in Floyld?

  3. Steve says:

If you think the Jays are going to give up those four players for Gavin Floyd, you are delusional.

  4. Adam Sager says:

First off I would like to thank you for reading as I’m new here I appreciate you taking time out of your tday to read all this but if you read it correctly I say that I want the White Sox to ask for that. That’s not what I think Floyd is worth. That is not it I an just saying for Kenny Williams to make a trade now he needs ask for the mon. And where it says the least I would take it should say or not and. But again thank you for reading and I hope you continue.
