Dustin McGowan Suffers Foot Injury In Minor League Game
Not that I’m insinuating anything by the timing of this particular injury…but it looks as though the Blue Jays have found their opening to keep Dustin McGowan in spring training a bit longer before having to make a choice as to what to do with their 5th rotation spot.
McGowan, who had been the presumed favourite for the rotation spot going into spring training, suffered a foot injury earlier today in a minor league game. As reported by Gregor Chisholm of MLB.com, the righty left his start in the 2nd inning of his outing, citing foot pain and unable to continue. He was able to walk unassisted to a car, before later being diagnosed with a day-to-day case of plantar fasciitis.
Although the team hasn’t said how this injury will affect his chances of winning the 5th starter job, I’m more or less ready assume that day-to-day will be translated to “not ready for opening day”. McGowan’s career has been riddled with injuries thus far, and while this particular foot injury might not be all that serious when it comes to affecting his long-term chances to make the Blue Jays as a starting pitcher, it will give the team a chance to get him more work on the mound to get ready to pitch every 5th day without having to expose him to waivers. It’s an unfortunate setback, but the back end of the Blue Jays rotation was never going to be a stable job anyway…so it’s not exactly the most major issue.
The injury to McGowan does mean that Aaron Laffey and Kyle Drabek are going to be locked in a battle to see who will get those starts when the season begins in April. If you were trying to handicap that competition now based on numbers, Laffey is probably the front-runner. Drabek can’t be counted out, though. His upside is still significant, and even if he’s not throwing no-hit innings out there, he seems to be impressing the Blue Jays brass thus far in March. It’ll be an interesting battle to watch.
